Westerly Hospital’s Community Benefits programs and services provide treatment, and promote health and healing as a response to identified community needs such as:

  • Free and discounted care to those unable to afford it.
  • Care to low-income beneficiaries of Medicaid and other indigent care programs (when Medicaid does not reimburse for the full cost of providing care).
  • Services designed to improve community health and increase access to health care.

Examples of Community Benefit programs at Westerly Hospital include cardiac rehabilitation and cardiac risk factor reduction programs, diabetes education and support groups, internship opportunities for nursing and allied health professionals, community education programs, financial counseling and arthritis exercise classes. Moreover, our Community Benefits focus and activities form the basis of our tax-exempt, not-for-profit status.

Community Health Needs Assessment

Every three years, Westerly Hospital carries out a Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) to gather information about local health needs and health behaviors to ensure hospital community health improvement initiatives and community benefit activities are aligned with community need. From September 2012 to May 2013, Westerly Hospital participated in a statewide comprehensive CHNA, led by the Hospital Association of Rhode Island (HARI) and its member hospitals. The assessment was conducted in a timeline to comply with requirements set forth in the Affordable Care Act, as well as to further the hospital’s commitment to community health and population health management.

The assessment examined a variety of community, household and health statistics to portray a full picture of the health and social determinants of health in Westerly Hospital’s service area.  The findings from the assessment guide Westerly Hospital’s Community Benefit initiatives and help us engage partners to address the identified health needs.
