Cancer (Oncology)

Overview

The Smilow Cancer Hospital Care Center at Westerly Hospital provides access to expert cancer care and treatment for patients in southwestern Rhode Island. Comprehensive outpatient cancer services, including consultation, screening, diagnosis and treatment are available on site. Surgeries may be performed at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital or at Yale New Haven Hospital.

Clinical Services and Programs

Diagnostic Imaging

Diagnostic imaging services include Bone Density Scan, Breast MRI, Digital Mammography, Gamma Imaging, MRI, PET/CT Scan and X-ray. Automated Whole Breast Ultrasound screenings can detect even extremely small cancers in women with dense breasts tissue. A 128-slice CT scan machine captures high-quality imaging with lower doses of radiation. Lung cancer screening is performed with a low-dose CT scanner.

Genetic Counseling

Genetic counseling is offered by the Smilow Cancer Center Genetics and Prevention Screening Program, part of Yale Cancer Center.

Integrative Medicine Services

We offer integrative medicine services in collaboration with the Crush Cancer Foundation to patients in active treatment. Patients are encouraged to discuss integrative medicine therapies with their Social Work team to learn what options are available. The team will also assist with scheduling.

Services include:

• Massage Therapy
• Reiki Sessions
• Yoga classes

Nutrition Services

Nutrition services are provided by registered dietitians and nutritionists at Smilow Cancer Hospital who work with patients to develop personalized nutrition plans aimed at preventing or controlling disease.

Prostate and Urologic Cancers Program

Prostate and Urologic Cancers Program patients benefit from the expertise of a collaborative approach to cancer care, which personalizes treatment options for tumors affecting the prostate, bladder, kidney, testes, upper tract (ureter and renal pelvis), penis, and urethra. The multidisciplinary team includes experts who specialize in medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, pathology, and diagnostic imaging.

Rehabilitative and Supportive Care

Rehabilitative and supportive care services are provided by hospital staff trained to assist cancer patients with the side effects of cancer treatment, such as “chemo brain,” fatigue and lymphedema.

Additional Services

  • A cancer registry that collects cancer patient data to monitor outcomes and to identify opportunities for improvement in care.
  • Clinical social work services at Smilow Cancer Hospital are provided by a full-time, oncology social worker to help patients and their families cope with diagnosis and treatment.
