Theodore A. Blaine, MD, chief of shoulder and elbow surgery for Yale Medicine, is a highly regarded orthopaedic surgeon who has pioneered several new medical and surgical techniques. These have included injectable medications for shoulder arthritis, minimally invasive shoulder replacement and arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. While he is an expert in minimally invasive surgical techniques, he tries to help patients avoid surgery whenever possible.
“Most problems can be treated non-surgically with physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications and injections that can be given in the doctor’s office,” Dr. Blaine says.
In addition to seeing patients for Yale Medicine, Dr. Blaine is a team physician at the collegiate and professional level, and for Yale University’s athletic teams. He says his love for orthopaedics and the strong relationships he develops with patients comes from personal experience. “As a former athlete with dislocated shoulders who has had surgeries on both of my shoulders, I understand what it feels like,” he says.
Dr. Blaine is a professor of orthopaedics and rehabilitation at Yale School of Medicine. He lectures internationally and has been name as one of the “Best Doctors in America.”
