Cardiac Risk Factor Reduction Program

Westerly Hospital’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Department in partnership with the Ocean Community YMCA in Westerly offers a 12-session, 6-week Cardiac Risk Factor Reduction Program open to adults of all ages and fitness levels.

The hospital portion of the program includes:

  • 12 telemetry monitored exercise sessions
  • Individualized exercise prescription created by exercise physiologists
  • Educational topics presented at each session

After the completion of the hospital portion, the participant can choose to be referred to the optional YMCA program which includes:

  • Eight-week membership to the Ocean Community YMCA
  • Wellness Center orientation
  • Meeting with a personal trainer
  • Heart rate monitor

This program is for adults of all ages and fitness levels.   A physician referral is required for admission into this program.  To be eligible, you must have one of the following risk factors:

  • High Cholesterol
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Overweight/Obesity
  • Stress
  • Family History of Heart Disease
  • Sedentary Lifestyle
  • Smoker

Diabetes Education Program

Westerly Hospital offers a comprehensive, five-week group education course to help patients gain practical knowledge and skills needed to manage their diabetes successfully.  The course is conducted by our multidisciplinary team of dieticians, nurses and pharmacists, all Certified Diabetes Outpatient Educators (CDOE). The program is accredited by the American Association of Diabetes Educators, which means that it meets the highest standards of care for diabetes education.  With a physician’s referral, many health insurers will cover the cost of these sessions.

The course covers:

  •         The fundamentals of nutritional management
  •         Label reading and meal planning options
  •         Guidelines for eating out and special occasions
  •         Glucose monitoring
  •         Medication management
  •         Insulin treatment and administration
  •         Sick-day care
  •         Foot care
  •         Exercise and stress management
  •         Prevention of complications

Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program

Westerly Hospital’s Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program provides patients with education on lung disease process and management, as well as a monitored exercise program provided by Respiratory Therapists.  The program takes place in the Morgan Building, Suite 101 at 45 Wells Street, Westerly. Smoking Cessation

Westerly Hospital’s Pulmonary Rehabilitation department periodically offers a seven-week smoking cessation program called “Freedom from Smoking.”  Sessions are held at Westerly Hospital for seven consecutive Tuesdays, and one additional session is held on a Thursday during “Quit Week.”  The program is facilitated by Westerly Hospital respiratory therapists trained in the American Lung Association program.   Participants learn tools and strategies to recover from tobacco addiction and help them stay quit for good.  The cost is $25 per participant to cover the cost of materials.

Strong Women Exercise Program

Westerly Hospital’s Cardiac Rehabilitation departments offers a StrongWomen program is a supervised, moderate-intensity exercise program designed for women at mid-life and older who want to improve their muscle strength, balance and bone density.  The program includes general nutrition information for bone loss prevention and general well-being. And exercise physiologists from our cardiac rehabilitation department are specially trained as StrongWomen Program Leaders to ensure that participants get the safe, effective exercise they need to support their health and well-being.

Classes meet for one hour, two times per week. Cost is $48 per six-week session.  Call 401-348-3882 for information on upcoming classes and specific times offered.
